Robert Adams

Obituary of Robert W. Adams

Robert William Adams, 97, of West Long Branch, passed away peacefully on January 4th after a brief stay at The Chelsea Assisted Living, Tinton Falls. He was born on April 17, 1921 to Robert C. Adams (World War I veteran) and Maude Adams of Linden Place, Red Bank. Bob described seeing ice sailing and eel fishing during winters on the frozen Navesink River and was proud to mention that during high school he was an usher at The Strand Theater, on the corner of Linden and Broad Street, Red Bank. After high school graduation in 1939, Bob gained employment with the Anaconda Copper Company in Perth Amboy. During World War II, Bob entered the Army Air Corps in May 1942; at the rank of lieutenant, he was a pilot and a pilot instructor of B-17s and B-29s at Cochran Field, Macon, Georgia.

After the war, Bob returned to Red Bank, and in 1949 married the love of his life, Virginia Healy Adams, at St. Michael’s Church, Long Branch. Bob and Virginia moved to Atlanta where he earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Georgia Tech in 1952. Bob continued working at Anaconda Copper Company, at the plant in Perth Amboy and headquarters in NYC. Then he was hired at Fort Monmouth as an Engineering Supervisor, where he worked 15 years until retirement. Bob and Virginia loved to travel to NYC to see Broadway shows, Radio City Music Hall and stay at The Plaza, as well as dine out with friends locally. Every summer, Bob and Virginia could be found with friends at the Allenhurst Beach Club or taking walks around Lake Takanassee. Bob and Virginia were married 57 wonderful years until her passing in 2006. Bob continued to frequent their favorite restaurant, the Molly Pitcher Inn, where the staff befriended him. He traveled every Thanksgiving to the Maryknoll Center, Maryknoll, NY to visit Virginia’s sister, Sr. Timothy Marie Healy, until her death. Bob continued as an active member and usher at St. Michael’s church, as well as an active member in National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Bob was treasured and will be missed by loving friends and neighbors, who will remember him this way: charming, classy, upbeat, smiling, witty, chatting about sports, driving himself about town, and enjoying an afternoon glass of scotch with a copy of The Daily News. He’d always say good bye with this advice – “watch your step”.
