Melvin Shteir

Obituary of Melvin Shteir

Melvin Shteir, 79, of Tinton Falls, passed away Friday, December 27th at home.

Born in Trenton, Mel lived in Holmdel and Ocean Township for many years before moving to Tinton Falls.  He received his undergraduate and law degrees from Rutgers University.  Following a successful career in private practice, Mel was appointed as a judge of the Division of Workers Compensation.  As a judge, Mel was known for his pragmatic approach to resolving workers’ cases as quickly and as fairly as possible.  Mel retired from the Division as the Supervising Judge of Workers Compensation for Monmouth County.

Mel loved both the Jersey Shore and New York City.  He would take long walks in Asbury Park, Spring Lake, and Ocean Grove, both to stay fit and to enjoy New Jersey’s natural beauty.  Mel would also visit New York City many weekends, going to the theater and out to dinner—so frequently that friends jokingly called him the “Mayor of New York.”  At home, Mel took pride in his extensive jazz record collection and in tracking his investment portfolio, looking for the next big trade.

Mel is survived by his children, Adam Shteir, Sean Marotta and Elana Shteir; his brother, Owen Shteir; and his grandchildren Anna, Mara, Kevin, and Ryan.

A memorial service will be held on January 8, 2020, at 11 a.m. in the Garden Room of Seabrook Village, 3000 Essex Road, Tinton Falls, N.J.  In lieu of traditional remembrances, donations may be made in Mel’s memory to the giver’s preferred charity.  For messages of condolence, please visit Mel’s page of tributes at www.woolleyboglioli.com.
