Obituary of Thomas D. Bazley

Thomas D. Bazley III, PhD was born on May 5, 1948 and died suddenly of a heart attack on December 15, 2018 while traveling on a cruise ship with his wife Marilyn Bazley. He was 70 years young.

Tom graduated from Long Branch High School in 1966. He then graduated from Rutgers University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History.  He also graduated in 1974 from Monmouth University earning a Master of Science in Education. In 1995 he earned a second Master of Arts Degree and in 2004 a PhD in Criminology from the University of South Florida.

Tom worked for the United States Postal Inspection Service as a US Postal Inspector until retiring in 2000. After retiring and earning his PhD, he taught as an adjunct professor in

criminology courses for various universities. He went on to publish several scholarly-peer reviewed articles as well as published two books; White Collar Crime and Crimes of the Art World.

He is survived by his wife, Lyn Bazley of Florida, to whom he was married to for 45 years, daughter, Kristen Bazley, EdD of Pennsylvania, son-in-law, Brian Bennett, brother, Robert Bazley, (Lisa), niece and nephew Katherine and John Bazley all of West Long Branch.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Bazley and father Thomas D. Bazley.

Tom was an avid world traveler, reader, kayaker, animal lover, history buff, art lover, and exercise enthusiast. He also was avid swimmer, biker, weightlifter and spent hours in the gym, no matter where he was in world. He spent many years from the time he was a child, as a runner on cross country teams and then even coaching on the college level, as an assistant track coach at Rutgers University. In his childhood, was also proud member of the Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He followed in his father’s footsteps and became both a camper and summer staff member at Sea Shore Day Camp in Long Branch, NJ. Tom’s love for Sea Shore Day Camp didn’t stop there, as the tradition was passed on to his daughter, Kristen, who was both a camper and summer camp counselor.

In addition to his 45 years of marriage to Lyn, he loved traveling, especially cruising the world with her. Less than two months ago, while they were on a 60-day cruise, he climbed the Great Wall of China, spent time in Shanghai, and traveled throughout Asia.

Tom loved all animals his entire life and had a passion towards animal rescues. Therefore, so that lives can be saved in his memory, in lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to: (*in Memory of Thomas D Bazley III in the memo line on the check)
